Long before sunrise, while most of the county is still asleep, Elmore Countyโs farmers are already hard at work, tending fields, caring for livestock, and keeping one of Alabamaโs fastest-growing communities fed and thriving.
From the pastures outside Eclectic to the fertile farmland along the Coosa River, these men and women play an essential role in both the countyโs economy and its quality of life. Their dedication doesnโt just sustain local families; it strengthens Elmore Countyโs foundation for future growth.
โFarmers are the backbone of our community,โ said Justin Barrett, managing member of Bar Neal Farms and owner of Bar J Farms. โWeโre entrepreneurs and caretakers of the land. Our work keeps our local food systems strong and supports jobs throughout the region.โ
Agriculture continues to be a cornerstone of Elmore Countyโs economy. Local farms supply produce, meats, and dairy to area farmersโ markets, restaurants, and schools, including the Elmore County Child Nutrition Program, which partners with area growers whenever possible to bring fresh, local food to students.
Beyond the fields, the ripple effect of farming reaches deep into other sectors, from equipment and supply businesses to transportation and agritourism. Many family farms have opened their gates to visitors, offering everything from farm-fresh goods to educational experiences for children and families.
โFarming is more than a job. Itโs a way of life,โ said Barrett. โWeโre proud to help feed our neighbors, and we want to continue teaching our young people to farm, so we can feed generations to come.โ
As Elmore County continues to grow, the Elmore County Economic Development Authority emphasizes the importance of supporting and preserving local agriculture. Programs promoting agribusiness innovation, local sourcing, and sustainable practices help ensure that farming remains a strong pillar of the community.
