For older adults in Millbrook, the Millbrook Senior Center at 3771 Grandview Road is much more than a buildingโitโs a place to connect, learn, and thrive. Through a collaborative partnership between the Grandview YMCA, the Central Alabama Aging Consortium, and the City of Millbrook, the center works every day to enrich the lives of local seniors and foster a sense of community.
According to Director Olivia Venable, the centerโs mission goes far beyond providing a place to gather. โOur goal is to make sure seniors feel valued, active, and connected,โ Venable said. โThis center is truly a community, and itโs built on partnerships and compassion.โ
From the moment participants walk through the doors, they are greeted by a welcoming environment where friendships flourish. The center offers a variety of activities that encourage both social interaction and personal growth. Seniors can enjoy games like dominoes, checkers, and bingo, get creative with crafts, watch movies together, or take part in light fitness classes. Educational lunch-and-learn seminars provide an opportunity to stay informed while sharing a meal and conversation with friends.
Nutrition is at the heart of the centerโs services. Every day, 62 hot meals are served on site, while 40 additional meals are delivered to homebound seniors. Venable emphasized the deeper meaning behind this service: โFor many of our participants, these meals are about more than food, theyโre about dignity, routine, and knowing someone cares.โ
Much of the meal delivery program is made possible by a dedicated team from Millbrook Methodist Church, who have served the center for more than 25 years. โTheir commitment is incredible,โ Venable said. โThey are a blessing to our seniors and a perfect example of community service in action.โ
The Millbrook Senior Center is more than just a place to eat or play games, itโs a place where seniors are seen, heard, and supported. Whether through shared meals, laughter over a game of bingo, or a friendly conversation during a fitness class, the center helps seniors feel connected to their community every day.
Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. For more information and to check the Senior Centerโs monthly calendar, visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MillbrookSeniorCenter.
