In Tallassee, Blue Ribbon Dairy LLC is demonstrating why local agriculture still matters and why tradition still has a meaningful place in todayโs world, while also creating new opportunities for the public to experience farm life firsthand.
The 100-acre farm has been in the same family since 1938. Michaela Wilsonโs great-grandfather, Buck Lott, established it as a Grade A dairy farm in 1947 and later passed it to his son, C.D. โBuddyโ Lott. Since November 2017, Wilson, a fourth-generation farmer, has operated Blue Ribbon Dairy, expanding its reach by selling milk directly to consumers and opening the farm to visitors in new ways.
Her connection to the farm runs deep. Wilson developed a passion for dairy at a young age, working alongside her grandfather, C.D. Lott, in his dairy operation. Today, the farm and its on-site store reflect a longstanding commitment to quality, care, and community, while also evolving into a destination for agritourism.
The dairy farm uses hands-on practices and pride at every stage of production. While the farm has always welcomed visitors, it is now placing a stronger emphasis on agritourism, inviting families, school groups, and travelers to engage directly with agriculture.
โWe allow the public to come seven days a week, 365 days a year,โ Wilson said. โThey can pick up fresh gallons of milk and ice cream. We offer hand-led pony rides on an obstacle course and host lots of birthday parties. This year, we are offering something new, u-pick flowers in the field.โ
In addition to these activities, visitors can interact with animals, observe daily farm operations, and gain a better understanding of where their food comes from, an experience Wilson says is becoming increasingly important.
As interest in agritourism grows across Alabama, Blue Ribbon Dairy is helping bridge the gap between consumers and agriculture by providing an authentic, working-farm experience. The goal is not only to sell products but to educate and create lasting memories for visitors of all ages.
Blue Ribbon Dairy is part of a growing movement across Elmore County and the surrounding area that prioritizes fresh, locally sourced Grade A milk. What distinguishes the farm is its batch-pasteurized, cream-line milk, produced on-site and valued for its rich, full-bodied flavor.
โThere is no skimming here,โ Wilson noted. โThe cream rises naturally to the top, just like it used to.โ
The farm is home to 25 dairy cows, miniature goats, ponies, a horse and a mini donkey, contributing to both its agricultural foundation and its welcoming, family-friendly environment, a key part of its agritourism appeal.
โWe were the first dairy to become a Grade A dairy farm in Elmore County,โ Wilson said. โGrade A means that we can ship the milk for human consumption.โ
Because the milk is batch pasteurized rather than ultra-processed, it retains more of its natural characteristics. Every step, from the barn to the bottle, is handled with care, resulting in a fresh, wholesome product.
Blue Ribbon Dairyโs impact extends beyond its products, rooted in the relationships it builds within the community. Through its agritourism efforts, customers do more than make a purchase; they spend time on the farm, ask questions, and form connections, finding reassurance in knowing the animals are raised on-site and that the people behind the product are their neighbors.
In Elmore County, farms like Blue Ribbon Dairy play an essential role, preserving agricultural traditions, strengthening the local economy, and offering a place where the public can reconnect with the land.
