ELMORE COUNTY –From Eclectic to Millbrook, Tallassee, and Wetumpka, Elmore County is rich in history, natural beauty, and cultural landmarks that tell the story of the region’s past.

Eclectic, near Lake Martin, is home to the historic Kowaliga Cabin, famously linked to Hank Williams’ song “Kaw-Liga.” This lakeside site draws music lovers and history buffs alike.

Millbrook offers attractions such as the Millbrook Cultural Arts Center, the Millbrook Mardi Gras parade, and the Millbrook Farmers Market. Its proximity to the Alabama River reflects its historical role in trade, while Jackson Lake still features part of the movie set from Big Fish, offering a unique Hollywood connection.

Tallassee boasts the Tallassee Historic District, with the late-1800s Tallassee Mill and the Benjamin Fitzpatrick Bridge, showcasing the town’s industrial past. Civil War history is reflected in the Tallassee Confederate Armory and Confederate Officers’ Quarters. The Tallassee Falls Museum traces the town’s development, while Thurlow Dam, known as the “Niagara of the South,” adds scenic and historical appeal. The 1939-built Seven Gables is another local treasure, admired for its classical architecture.

Wetumpka, the county seat of Elmore County, stands out for its deep historical and geological significance. The Wetumpka Impact Crater Park is one of the best preserved in North America. Fort Toulouse-Jackson Park offers reenactments and colonial history, while the Elmore County Museum highlights Native American life, early settlers, Civil War artifacts, and African American history. Wetumpka is also located along Alabama’s Fall Line, where the Appalachian foothills meet the Coastal Plain—a feature that shaped its early development. The city gained national attention when it was featured on HGTV’s Home Town Takeover, which helped revitalize its charming downtown.

Elmore County’s historic districts offer excellent shopping, dining, and entertainment. Downtown Eclectic, Tallassee, and Wetumpka feature local boutiques, antique stores, and artisan markets in beautifully preserved buildings.
