Elmore County – Main Street Wetumpka recently hosted a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening of Fall Line Park. Executive Director Haley Greene welcomed attendees and thanked the park curators for their vision.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Greene said. “Thank you for your support, your guidance and your vision.”

Mary Helmer Wirth, President of Main Street Alabama, spoke about the power of community. “Main Street is a family… everybody gets a piece of it. You guys are amazing.”

Wirth recognized Jenny Stubbs, the first director of Main Street Wetumpka, for her dedication. Treasurer Dennis Fain emphasized the importance of funding: “Things like this just don’t come out of the ground… This park cost $130,000. We raised every penny of it.”

Bobby Barrett of the Wetumpka Lions Club honored longtime member Sam Turner, who served 52 years. His father, Cliff, was also a 50-year member.

Mayor Jerry Willis praised the team behind the park. “They caught on. They saw the vision… Folks, we aren’t finished. There’s a lot more coming to Wetumpka.”

To explain the park’s name, James Mays of Auburn University spoke about the Fall Line—a geological boundary between the Appalachian Highlands and the Coastal Plain.

The Coastal Plain formed during the Cretaceous Period, when high sea levels led to flooding and marine sediment deposits.

Because the landscapes are so different, the wildlife and plant life in each region also vary greatly.
