Successful Connections strengthens the community through service, support, and opportunity

In communities throughout Elmore County, economic development is often measured in new businesses, job creation, and infrastructure improvements. But just as important are the organizations working behind the scenes to ensure residents have the support and resources they need to succeed.

That is the mission of Successful Connections, a local nonprofit founded by Kim Smith to serve as a bridge between individuals and opportunities that can help them build better lives.

“I opened Successful Connections because I saw a real need in the community,” Smith said. “I wanted to create an organization that could connect people to resources, support, and opportunities for growth. I wanted it to be a place where people could feel seen, heard, supported, and respected.”

What began as an idea to help others has grown into a multifaceted community resource center dedicated to empowering underserved residents through outreach, education, and practical support.

“Successful Connections was created to be more than a nonprofit,” Smith said. “It was created to be a community resource center, a place of connection, dignity, and hope.”

Through programs such as Hearts & Hangers, which provides clothing to those in need, the Blessing Box, community outreach initiatives, notary services, and resource referrals, the organization works to meet people where they are and help them move forward.

Smith said the nonprofit’s impact can be felt throughout Millbrook and neighboring communities.
“Successful Connections has brought resources, outreach, and community support directly to Millbrook and the surrounding areas,” she said. “We have helped provide clothing through Hearts & Hangers, supported families through food and essential items, connected people to resources, created community events, partnered with churches, businesses, schools, and local leaders, and helped bring people together around service.”

Beyond meeting immediate needs, Smith believes the organization plays an important role in strengthening the local economy by helping residents gain the stability and confidence needed to pursue education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

When families have access to clothing, food, and support services, they are better equipped to focus on school, work, and long-term goals. By collaborating with local businesses, schools, churches, and civic leaders, Successful Connections also fosters partnerships that keep resources circulating within the community.

“We are helping to fill gaps for individuals and families who may not know where to turn,” Smith said. “Successful Connections has become a place where people can ask for help without feeling ashamed. That matters. When people feel supported, they are more likely to keep going.”For Smith, the most meaningful moments are often the simplest.

“Sometimes it is a person receiving clothing and walking out with dignity,” she said.

“Sometimes it is a family receiving food when they were not sure how they would make it. Sometimes it is a senior receiving a care box and feeling remembered. Those moments remind me that service changes lives.”

Successful Connections provides education, career opportunities, life-skills training, and mentorship for youth and underserved individuals from diverse backgrounds. The nonprofit also promotes healthy living and outreach programs designed to address challenges facing underrepresented communities.

The organization’s long-term goal is to establish a Community Connections Facility that will serve as a central hub for collaboration, education, and support.

As Millbrook continues to grow, Smith believes true progress is measured not only by economic indicators but by the strength of the community itself.

By creating a place where people can find hope, dignity, and opportunity, Successful Connections is helping ensure that growth in Millbrook includes everyone.
